cram the van christmas appeal

The Cuillin Hills Cram the Van 2019 The Cuillin Hills The Cuillin Hills

Cuillin FM is thrilled to be launching for the sixth year their Cram the Van Appeal.

Cuillin FM is thrilled to be launching our “Cram the Van” Christmas Appeal for 2019. Once again, the station will be gathering new toys and gifts for local children (from babies to teens) via the various donation points around their listening area and literally cramming the Cuillin FM van with all contributions to then distribute to the local children and families who will appreciate it most this Christmas.

We are now entering our sixth year of the Appeal and to date the community have donated hundreds of new toys and gifts and have helped families all over Skye and Lochalsh to have a better Christmas.

Information from the Scottish Government report; Poverty and income inequality in Scotland: 2015-2018 indicates that:

  • 20% of people in Scotland were living in relative poverty after housing costs in during this period.
  • The poverty rate continues to rise.
  • Child poverty in Scotland is up from 230,000 to 240,000, or one in five children, with 65% of children in poverty living in working families, showing the consequences of poorly paid employment and falling wages.

It is hard to believe these statistics include Skye and Lochalsh. We have heard stories of local children choosing to skip meals so other members of their family can eat. These families are here on our doorsteps and for many the Christmas season is a particularly hard time of year. Cuillin FM has a great platform to reach the local community and they want to use it to help ease the burden on local families at Christmas.

The toys and vouchers are sorted and distributed through Cuillin FM working alongside local groups, last year they worked with School Nurses, Midwives, Fostering and Adoption, Community Children’s Worker, Children’s Service Worker, Family First, Social Work and Health Visitors.

We aim to keep it as simple as possible. After we’ve collected all your donations we will do some initial sorting and then pass them on to the local organisation we partner with. They will then sort and distribute them to the families they’ve identified in time for Christmas. Last year toys were distributed via the following local groups on Skye and Lochalsh:

  • School Nurses
  • Midwives
  • Fostering and Adoption
  • Community Children’s Worker
  • Children’s Service Worker
  • Family First
  • Social Work
  • Health Visitors

We will have Big Red Toy Bins at the following locations around Skye and Lochalsh where you can drop them off:

  • Portree Co-op (Woodpark Road)
  • Broadford Co-op
  • Kyle Co-op
  • SPAR, Broadford
  • Kyle Post Office
  • MacIntyre’s Toy Shop, Portree
  • Aros Centre, Portree
  • Cuillin FM Studio, Portree

All toys must be brand new and unwrapped, used toys cannot be accepted. They also accept cash donations which are used to buy vouchers for teens and families.

The Red Bins will be out in shops for four weeks from Saturday 11th November until Sunday 8th December. These donations will be distributed to local families by our partners in good time for Christmas.
