Cuillin FM, Skye and Lochalsh’s local radio station, has won this year’s prestigious Thomas Prag Award at the Highlands and Islands Community Broadcasting Federation’s Conference in Inverness.

The show which brought the prize to Skye for the first time was the station’s Friday’s Big Breakfast Show presented by Nick Wakeham, John Grundy and Shona Campbell. The two and a half hour show has been running on the schedules for the last 2 years and is a mixture of madness and music brought together, somehow, by three of the station’s presenters who obviously have a great rapport.

On judging the show, Thomas Prag said that programmes with three presenters are a recipe for disaster and when he saw that this show had that calamitous ingredient, he expected to be listening to a nightmare in broadcasting. He changed his mind five minutes into the programme and was intrigued to see how far the presenters could push the bounds of broadcasting and then, at the last minute, bring the whole thing round: A show that should have been teetering on the edge of disaster actually works and that is due to the dexterity of it’s three presenters who appear to be having the time of their lives.

The Award was set up in 2004 to provide a competition appropriate to Scottish community broadcasters who had no reasonable prospect of competing in existing national awards for whom "very small station" can mean a station with a minimum audience of 50,000 and has been won for the last 3 years by Nevis Radio.
